MD-102 is worth it for anyone who manages, or wants to manage, Windows and mobile devices with Microsoft Intune. It is the one Microsoft credential built around endpoint administration, and it maps closely to the daily work of a desktop support, modern workplace or device management role. Its value falls away if your organisation runs a different device management platform.

What the Exam Actually Is
MD-102 leads to the Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate. It is a 100-minute exam with a passing score of 700 out of 1000, taken at a Pearson VUE test centre or online proctored. Microsoft prices it by the country you sit it in; the US list price for associate exams is USD 165.
The July 24, 2026 skills outline has five domains. Manage and Maintain Devices is the largest at 25 to 30 per cent, followed by Prepare Infrastructure for Devices at 20 to 25 per cent. Protect Devices and Manage and Secure Applications carry 15 to 20 per cent each, and the new Optimize Endpoint Operations by Using Automation, Monitoring, and Reporting domain carries 10 to 15 per cent.
What Changed in the July 2026 Refresh
The refresh added a whole domain. Optimize Endpoint Operations covers automating Intune with PowerShell and Microsoft Graph, custom compliance scripts, Security Copilot agents in Intune, Endpoint Analytics, proactive remediations and alert rules. Manage Applications was renamed Manage and Secure Applications, reflecting its weight on app protection policies and Conditional Access.
The rest of the outline tracks where Intune itself has moved: Autopilot device preparation alongside the older deployment profiles, Windows 365 Cloud PCs, Windows Autopatch and Hotpatch, and the Intune Suite add-ons such as Endpoint Privilege Management, Cloud PKI and Remote Help. Study material written before July 2026 will miss the new domain entirely.
Who Genuinely Benefits
Desktop support and service desk staff moving into device management get the clearest return. The exam covers the tasks that role grows into: enrolling devices, building compliance and configuration policies, deploying apps and managing Windows updates across a fleet.
Administrators already running Intune benefit too, because the outline forces a structured pass over areas most tenants only use part of, such as Android Enterprise enrollment profiles, Apple Business Manager, multi-admin approval and scope tags. For consultants and managed service providers, the credential is also a line item customers and Microsoft partner programmes recognise.
The Real Cost in Time and Money
The fee is USD 165 in the US and varies by country. Microsoft role-based certifications are valid for one year and renew through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn, so keeping MD-102 current costs study time rather than a second fee.
Preparation is the larger cost. The exam is hands-on in spirit: questions describe a tenant and ask which policy, profile or enrollment method fits. Someone who administers Intune day to day can often prepare in four to six weeks. Someone new to it should plan longer and build a trial tenant, because reading about Autopilot or app protection policies is a poor substitute for configuring them.
Honest Cases Where It Is Not Worth It
If your organisation manages devices with a different platform and has no plan to move to Intune, MD-102 tests tools you will not use. A credential for the platform you actually run will count for more with the people hiring you.
If your work is Microsoft 365 administration more broadly, meaning mail, Teams, SharePoint and identity rather than devices, MS-102 fits the job better. And if you are aiming at identity or security specialism, SC-300 or SC-200 is a more direct route than an endpoint exam.
How to Prepare Effectively
Work from the official study guide and weight your time toward Manage and Maintain Devices and Prepare Infrastructure for Devices, which together are around half the exam. Do not skip the new automation and monitoring domain because it is the smallest; it is also the one older courses leave out.
Pair a trial tenant with blueprint-aligned practice questions that explain every option. Scenario questions on this exam usually turn on one distinction, such as retire versus wipe, a registered versus a joined device, or an app protection policy versus an app configuration policy, and the explanation is where that distinction sticks.
