Your step-by-step plan
Get fluent in the manuals
Week 1Before coding anything, learn where things live: the CPT sections and their number ranges, the ICD-10-CM index-then-tabular workflow, and the HCPCS Level II layout. The exam is open book, so speed and navigation are half the battle.
Lock down terminology and anatomy
Week 1-2Drill prefixes, suffixes, roots, body planes, and organ systems until you can read an operative or clinic note without stopping. You cannot code what you cannot follow.
Master modifiers and the surgical package
Week 2-3Work through the high-frequency modifiers (51, 50, 59 and X{EPSU}, 22, 25, 26/TC) from real notes, and learn what the global surgical package includes so you stop reporting bundled care separately.
Drill the rule-heavy domains
Week 3-4Anaesthesia formula, current E/M levelling by decision making or time, ICD-10-CM specificity and sequencing, and HCPCS unit maths. These are where a prepared candidate still loses marks, so practise them deliberately.
Practise full practical cases
Week 4-5Code complete scenarios that combine a visit, a procedure, and diagnoses, and name the compliance failure where one is present. This mirrors the exam's application items and the way real charts arrive.
Time yourself against the clock
Week 5-6Take timed sets so you learn your per-question pace and how to flag and return to slow items. Running out of time, not running out of knowledge, is the common failure.
Sit full mock exams until you clear the pass mark comfortably
Week 6+Use unseen questions and review every miss until you can name why the wrong option was wrong, not just which one was right. Readiness is a measured score, not a feeling.

It is 7 stages, paced by how much time you can give it each week - most candidates work through it in 2 to 6 weeks. Each stage below has a suggested duration; slow down on any stage where the recall checks in the study guide are not landing before moving on.
What order should I study CPC in?
Follow the stages in order below. They are sequenced deliberately: foundational material first, then the domains weighted heaviest on the exam, then timed practice, with review passes built in rather than left to the end.
Do I need practice questions as part of this plan?
