A step-by-step PMP study plan: the exact order to study in, how long to spend on each stage, and when to start practice questions. Follow it top to bottom.

The real PMP is 180 (175 scored) questions in 230 minutes. For the full domain-by-domain breakdown behind each stage, read the PMP study guide.

Your step-by-step plan

  1. Map the outline and set a realistic schedule

    Week 1

Start from the three domains and their weights, and plan your time in proportion: the most for Process, nearly as much for People, and a focused, smaller block for Business Environment. Note that roughly half the exam is agile or hybrid, so budget time for both mindsets from the start rather than treating agile as an afterthought.

  2. Learn the People domain through the servant-leadership lens

    Weeks 2-3

Study team building, empowerment, conflict resolution, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement as a coach and facilitator, not a commander. Drill the conflict modes until collaborate/problem-solve is your default, and practise recognising premature escalation and command-and-control distractors.

  3. Master the Process domain as ordered sequences

    Weeks 3-5

Work through scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk, integration, procurement, and closure as steps that happen in a correct order. Memorise the threat and opportunity risk responses, practise earned value calculations until they are automatic, and learn to spot the right-but-premature action.

  4. Cover Business Environment and the benefits chain

    Week 6

Study compliance, benefits realisation, value delivery, and external and organisational change. Fix the idea that a project is judged against its business case and that benefits and their measurement often outlive the project, then practise assess-impact-first questions.

  5. Drill predictive, agile, and hybrid tailoring

    Week 7

Take mixed sets of scenario questions and force yourself to read the delivery approach the stem establishes before choosing. Practise switching between a change board answer for predictive work and a backlog-reprioritisation answer for agile work so the approach signal becomes second nature.

  6. Practise full-length scenario sets with worked explanations

    Weeks 8-9

Sit timed sets that mix all three domains and both mindsets. For every question you miss, read the worked explanation and the per-option rationale until you understand why the best answer beat the plausible one, then log the trap so you stop repeating it.

  7. Consolidate weak areas and rehearse exam-day pacing

    Week 10

Review your logged traps, redo the domains where your scores lag, and take at least one final full-length timed run to confirm your pace and stamina. Aim to finish with time to review flagged items rather than racing the clock.

Frequently asked questions

How long does this PMP study plan take?

It is 7 stages, paced by how much time you can give it each week - most candidates work through it in 2 to 6 weeks. Each stage below has a suggested duration; slow down on any stage where the recall checks in the study guide are not landing before moving on.

What order should I study PMP in?

Follow the stages in order below. They are sequenced deliberately: foundational material first, then the domains weighted heaviest on the exam, then timed practice, with review passes built in rather than left to the end.

Do I need practice questions as part of this plan?

Yes. Reading alone does not surface what you have not actually learned. This plan builds in graded practice, and the full 297-question bank is free to use as you work through each stage.

Is this plan enough on its own, or do I need the full study guide too?

This page is the plan: what to do and in what order. The study guide adds the domain-by-domain breakdown, easy-to-confuse traps, and worked examples behind each stage - read it alongside this plan, not instead of it.
