The AWS Certified AI Practitioner and the NVIDIA-Certified Associate in Generative AI LLMs are both entry points into AI certification, but they answer different questions. They are not really competitors. AIF-C01 is a literacy credential at the foundational tier; NCA-GENL is an associate-level credential with more engineering content. Plenty of people would sensibly do AIF-C01 first and NCA-GENL later as their work gets more hands-on.
What the AWS AI Practitioner Tests
AIF-C01 is a foundational AWS certification of 65 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions over 90 minutes, with a passing score of 700 on the 100 to 1000 scaled range, for a fee of USD 100. More than half the exam is generative AI: Applications of foundation models at 28 per cent and Generative AI fundamentals at 24 per cent, with the rest across AI and ML fundamentals, prompt engineering and evaluation, and responsible and secure AI.
The framing is conceptual and AWS-flavoured. It tests whether you understand AI services and how to apply them, not whether you can build models. It is the stronger choice for product, analyst, consulting, and cloud-practitioner roles that need credible AI literacy within an AWS context.
What the NVIDIA NCA-GENL Tests
NCA-GENL is an associate-level NVIDIA credential of 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions over 60 minutes, delivered online with proctoring, for a fee of USD 125. NVIDIA does not publish a fixed passing percentage. Its weighting is more technical: Core Machine Learning and AI Knowledge at 30 per cent, Software Development at 24 per cent, and Experimentation at 22 per cent, with Data Analysis and Visualization and Trustworthy AI making up the rest.
That distribution means NCA-GENL leans into the engineering of language-model systems rather than platform literacy. It is vendor-neutral on the cloud question, so it reads as evidence of generative AI and LLM knowledge regardless of which provider you deploy on.
How to Choose Between Them
Decide on two axes: ecosystem and depth. On ecosystem, if your organisation runs on AWS and you want AI literacy that fits that world, AIF-C01 is the obvious fit; if you want a credential that is not bound to a cloud provider, NCA-GENL travels better. On depth, AIF-C01 is foundational and conceptual, while NCA-GENL carries more machine-learning and software-development content, so it signals a more technical grounding.
If you are early in your AI journey or in a non-engineering role, start with AIF-C01. If you are building with language models and want a more technical, platform-neutral signal, NCA-GENL is the better single choice. Doing both, in that order, is a coherent path rather than a redundant one.
How to Prepare for Either
For AIF-C01, weight your study toward the two generative AI domains that make up more than half the exam. For NCA-GENL, weight it toward core machine-learning knowledge, software development, and experimentation. In both cases the published exam guide is the anchor for what is actually tested.
